Apple’s upcoming iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max are shaping up to be a more substantial upgrade than the previous generation, although most of the details remain based on leaks and rumours. The phones are expected to launch in September, with September 9 being one possible date, but Apple has not confirmed the launch schedule.
The biggest changes could include a new A20 Pro chip, larger batteries, Apple’s next-generation C2 modem, camera improvements, a smaller Dynamic Island and expanded satellite connectivity.
A20 Pro could bring a major performance boost
The A20 Pro is expected to be one of the headline upgrades. It is rumoured to be Apple’s first smartphone chip manufactured using TSMC’s 2nm process and could also use newer Gate-All-Around transistor technology.
One leak claims the chip could be around 18% faster than the A19 Pro while consuming up to 30% less power. If accurate, that combination could improve demanding workloads such as gaming and on-device AI while also helping battery life.
However, the newer manufacturing technology could increase production costs and potentially push up the iPhone’s overall price.
Larger battery and Apple's C2 modem
The iPhone 18 Pro Max could reportedly receive a battery of approximately 5,425mAh in the US version, compared with around 5,088mAh for the corresponding iPhone 17 Pro Max version. Physical-SIM variants could reportedly use a 5,235mAh battery.
Combined with the more efficient A20 Pro, the larger battery could deliver noticeably better endurance.
Apple is also expected to introduce its C2 modem, continuing its gradual move away from Qualcomm modem hardware. A more efficient in-house modem could improve power consumption and cellular performance while giving Apple greater control over the integration between the modem, processor and software.
Camera changes
Apple could make one of its more significant camera changes by introducing a variable-aperture main camera.
Unlike a fixed-aperture lens, a variable aperture can adjust how much light enters the camera. This could provide greater control over depth of field, portrait photography and the amount of the scene kept in focus.
However, one rumour claims the feature could be limited to the iPhone 18 Pro Max, because the mechanism reportedly requires additional internal space.
The Pro models are still expected to retain three rear cameras, with 48-megapixel sensors reportedly used for the main, ultra-wide and telephoto cameras. Apple may therefore focus more on optics, sensor improvements and computational photography rather than simply increasing megapixel counts.
The front-facing camera is expected to remain an 18-megapixel Center Stage camera.
Camera Control could become simpler
Apple could also modify the Camera Control button. The current version combines physical and touch-sensitive controls, but some users have found its operation less intuitive.
The iPhone 18 series may reportedly remove some of the touch-sensitive components while retaining the primary camera-control functionality, potentially making the feature simpler to operate.
Smaller Dynamic Island
Another anticipated change is a smaller Dynamic Island.
Some reports suggest Apple may move parts of the Face ID system beneath the display, reducing the size of the visible cutout. Whether Apple is ready to implement that change with the iPhone 18 generation remains uncertain.
The display could also use an updated LTPO+ technology, potentially allowing more precise power management and improving efficiency.
Satellite connectivity could expand
Apple is reportedly exploring more advanced satellite connectivity, potentially including satellite-based 5G capabilities.
The idea would be to allow iPhones to maintain connectivity in areas where conventional mobile networks are unavailable. Such functionality could be particularly useful in remote locations, although its real-world usefulness would depend heavily on satellite infrastructure and availability in individual countries.
Price could increase
The upgrades could also make the iPhone 18 Pro more expensive.
The iPhone 17 Pro starts at around Rs 1,34,900 in India, while leaks have suggested that the iPhone 18 Pro could start at approximately Rs 1,39,900, with some reports predicting increases of Rs 10,000–20,000 depending on the model and storage.
The iPhone 18 Pro Max has reportedly been tipped to start around Rs 1,54,900 in India.
For now, however, Apple has confirmed none of these specifications, prices or the proposed September 9 launch date. They should therefore be treated as rumoured specifications rather than final iPhone 18 Pro details.
