A heartbreaking incident from Haryana's Sonipat has ignited discussions about changing family relationships after an elderly man, who devoted his life to educating and supporting his daughters, passed away in an old-age home without any of them attending his final rites.
According to officials at the old-age home, Shivcharan Ratan Gupta, a textile businessman, had been suffering from a prolonged illness and died while hoping to see his daughters one last time. Although they were informed of his death, none of his three daughters visited the home or attended his funeral.
Instead, they sent Rs 5,100 to cover the funeral expenses and requested that a video of their father's last rites be shared with them on their mobile phones.
Visuals from the incident showed Gupta's photograph, followed by staff members from the old-age home and local residents performing his final rites. Another clip showed the daughters watching the cremation through a video call while the funeral was underway. Members of the community were also seen carrying out the rituals in the absence of close family members.
Speaking about the incident, Anand Kumar, administrator of the old-age home, said Gupta had spent his final days at the facility after his health deteriorated. He added that the elderly man frequently expressed a desire to meet his daughters and had hoped they would come to see him.
Kumar said Gupta had worked as a textile merchant and had invested significantly in his daughters' education. He ensured they completed their studies, and two of them later became teachers.
People at the old-age home said Gupta was immensely proud of his daughters' accomplishments and believed he had fulfilled all his responsibilities as a father.
However, when it came time for his final farewell, none of his daughters arrived. After receiving the money for the funeral, the old-age home staff and local residents took it upon themselves to perform his last rites with dignity.
The incident has prompted widespread discussion on social media and among local residents, with many expressing sorrow over the circumstances of Gupta's final days.
Several people said the episode highlighted the growing loneliness experienced by many elderly parents, while others viewed it as a reminder of the importance of standing by loved ones during life's most difficult moments.
