India’s job market is changing, with software engineering no longer leading hiring growth. According to Indeed, job postings rose 1.2% in July after declining for three months, and were 8.3% higher than a year earlier.
Healthcare and care-related jobs are seeing the strongest growth. Hiring for medical technicians rose 30%, physicians and surgeons 26%, childcare workers 26% and therapy roles 25%. In contrast, IT infrastructure and support jobs fell 24%, software development declined 18%, data and analytics dropped 14%, and IT systems and solutions fell 11%.
At the same time, AI is becoming increasingly important across industries. Indeed found that 349 job titles in India, or 6.6% of the roles it tracks, now include significant references to AI. This has doubled over the past year and nearly quadrupled in two years.
Interestingly, non-tech jobs now account for 42% of AI-related job titles, compared with 39% last year and 29% two years ago. This shows that AI is no longer limited to technology roles and is increasingly becoming part of everyday jobs in areas such as marketing, healthcare and logistics.
Overall, India’s job market is not simply slowing down. It is changing, with healthcare and other human-focused roles gaining momentum while AI skills are becoming valuable across almost every sector.
