Gautam Gambhir praised the Indian team for their performance in the recently concluded Test series against Sri Lanka on Friday, August 28. The series also gave Gambhir his first overseas series win as India's head coach and strengthened the team's position in the World Test Championship race.
Several players made significant contributions during the series. Devdutt Padikkal scored two centuries and accumulated 328 runs across three innings, while Manav Suthar emerged as India's leading bowler with 16 wickets from three innings.
Taking to X, Gambhir said the team displayed the qualities required to succeed in Test cricket, highlighting their character, patience and mental resilience.
"Test cricket needs character, patience and mental toughness that’s shown by our boys!" Gambhir wrote.
Gambhir also reserved special praise for Sri Lanka's Sonal Dinusha, who enjoyed an outstanding series. The left-hander scored 420 runs in four innings and struck centuries in both innings in Colombo.
Dinusha played a crucial role in preventing India from completing a victory in the second Test. With Sri Lanka in trouble on Day 5 and India needing only four wickets to wrap up the innings and chase a manageable target, Dinusha combined with Lahiru Kumara to frustrate the visitors.
The pair helped Sri Lanka take their second-innings score to 429 for nine before the hosts declared. Having taken a 216-run first-innings lead, Sri Lanka set India a notional target, but with very little time left in the match, both teams agreed to end proceedings with a draw.
Gambhir was impressed by Dinusha's resistance and acknowledged his contribution to Sri Lanka's fightback.
"Special shoutout to Sonal Dinusha for his exceptional performance!" Gambhir said.

The result in Colombo proved costly for India, who had been in a strong position to win the Test before Sri Lanka staged a remarkable recovery. The dropped points could become important as the World Test Championship race develops.
A victory would have lifted India's points percentage to 63.33 and moved them above Bangladesh into fourth place. Instead, the draw gave India just four points, leaving them fifth in the standings.
Dinusha's unbeaten 133 was the cornerstone of Sri Lanka's resistance. What initially appeared to be a straightforward Indian victory turned into a prolonged battle for survival, with the lower order also contributing to the hosts' effort. Dinusha, however, remained the key figure in Sri Lanka's bid to save the match.
India still have seven Tests remaining in the current WTC cycle, giving them plenty of opportunities to make up the lost ground. However, the points missed in Colombo will now have to be recovered through strong results in the matches ahead.
