India marked Independence Day with an impressive start to their Hockey World Cup campaign as Harmanpreet Singh’s side defeated Wales 3-1 in their opening Group D match in Amstelveen on Saturday, August 15.
India faced some early pressure, with Wales controlling possession and creating the first clear chance. However, the Indian side gradually settled into the game, began creating opportunities and made effective use of their penalty corners.
Sanjay opened the scoring in the eighth minute with a powerful drag-flick, giving India an early advantage. Just three minutes later, captain Harmanpreet Singh doubled the lead by converting another penalty corner. His low attempt towards the goalkeeper’s left made it 2-0 and put Wales under significant pressure.
India finished the first quarter firmly in control, transforming an initially cautious start into a dominant period and giving themselves an ideal foundation for their World Cup campaign.
HARMANPREET LEADS INDIA’S CHARGE
Wales attempted to mount a comeback but found it difficult to consistently penetrate India’s defence. Pritchard came close to scoring in the second quarter after getting past the advancing goalkeeper, but his shot struck the post.
India maintained their discipline, occasionally sitting deeper before attempting to regain possession and launch quick counter-attacks.
The Indian side continued to create chances after the interval and increased their advantage in the 43rd minute. Another penalty corner gave Harmanpreet an opportunity, and the captain delivered once again, sending a low, powerful drag-flick into the net to score his second goal of the game.
With a three-goal advantage, India were able to manage the final stages of the contest, although Wales continued looking for a breakthrough.
The Welsh side eventually reduced the deficit through Sam Welsh in the 56th minute after a penalty-stroke was awarded following a review. However, the goal came too late to threaten India’s lead.
India had opportunities to add to their tally, creating several chances through cut-backs and attacking moves, but their overall display was enough to secure a convincing victory.
The win gives Harmanpreet Singh and his teammates important momentum before their next Group D match against England on Monday, followed by the highly anticipated encounter with Pakistan.
