Hockey World Cup: The Netherlands breaks hearts once more, virtually ending India's hopes of making the semifinals

India’s hopes of reaching the semi-finals of the 2026 Men’s Hockey World Cup are almost over after the Netherlands defeated Craig Fulton’s team 3-1. Goals from Duco Telgenkamp, Tjep Hoedemaekers and Thijs van Dam secured the hosts’ place in the semi-finals, while India’s lone goal came from captain Harmanpreet Singh.

India showed plenty of quality and resilience through the first three quarters, controlling possession and putting pressure on the Dutch defence. They also defended penalty corners effectively, with Manpreet Singh making several crucial interventions. However, the Netherlands eventually found a way through in the 41st minute when Telgenkamp finished a well-built attack.

The goal changed the momentum of the match. India were forced to push forward for an equaliser, while Harmanpreet was also dealing with a back problem and spent considerable time receiving treatment. The Dutch took advantage of the increased pressure and scored again through Hoedemaekers in the 51st minute.

Harmanpreet briefly brought India back into the contest by converting a penalty corner, but the comeback lasted only four minutes. A misplaced pass from Manpreet allowed the Netherlands to launch a counterattack, which Van Dam converted to make it 3-1.

The defeat was particularly painful given India’s strong performance for much of the match. They had maintained their defensive discipline and created opportunities, but once the Dutch scored, India struggled to maintain the same composure and repeated some of the mistakes that had hurt them earlier in the tournament.

India will now face Argentina on Monday, August 24, in their final group match. Argentina’s 3-1 win over England keeps a narrow mathematical possibility alive, but India will need a strong result of their own as well as help from the Netherlands to remain in contention.

Harmanpreet acknowledged that India played well during the first three quarters but said the team once again failed to maintain its focus and consistency until the final whistle.

The loss also continues India’s long wait to break their World Cup semi-final drought. The Netherlands had eliminated India at the 2018 World Cup as well, after India had taken an early lead in the quarter-final.
