KL Rahul initially thought he had been dismissed when Prabath Jayasuriya trapped him in front of the stumps during the 11th over of India's second innings. The Sri Lankan left-arm spinner delivered a superb arm ball from around the wicket that drifted in, beat Rahul's defence and struck his front pad.
The on-field umpire immediately raised his finger, and Rahul was given out. India captain Shubman Gill, watching from the dugout, also believed the decision was correct and began putting on his gloves, preparing to come out as the next batter.
Rahul was also about to leave the field when Devdutt Padikkal, his batting partner and India's new No. 3, intervened.
Padikkal suggested that Rahul's large stride forward while attempting to defend might have saved him and urged him to review the decision. Rahul eventually took the DRS, although the initial stages of the review appeared to support the umpire's call. The ball was shown to be pitching outside off, hitting in line and then tracking over the stumps.
The review ultimately revealed that the delivery would have missed the stumps, passing just over the middle and leg stump. Rahul's dismissal was overturned.
Relieved to have survived, Rahul immediately embraced Padikkal, who had been the only person convinced that the India opener had been wrongly given out. The moment became one of the highlights of India's dominant Day 4 against Sri Lanka in Galle.
However, Rahul was unable to capitalise on his second chance. He was dismissed in the 15th over, again by Jayasuriya.
Having made an aggressive 35 off 47 balls, Rahul attempted to clear mid-on but got a leading edge. The ball went straight to Milan Rathnayake at mid-off, who completed a straightforward catch.
India had already established a lead of more than 250 runs during the opening session of Day 4. Their commanding position was built on the back of Devdutt Padikkal's outstanding 167 in the first innings, which helped India post 462. Manav Suthar then played a key role with the ball, taking four wickets as Sri Lanka were bowled out for 284.
