You may have come across Dario Amodei, the CEO of Anthropic who frequently makes headlines. While he is widely seen as the driving force behind the AI company, recent reports suggest that his wife, Cami Clark, may have an equally significant, if not greater, influence in helping Anthropic pursue its ambition of making Claude a dominant AI platform. Yet, despite Claude’s vast knowledge, remarkably little is known about Clark.
Clark has maintained a relatively private profile and does not officially work for Anthropic. However, she is often seen with Amodei at major conferences and events, including the World Economic Forum in Davos. She also accompanied him during his recent trip to India for the country’s first AI Impact Summit.
That changed this week after reports from the Wall Street Journal, Forbes and The Information examined Clark’s background and her alleged influence around Anthropic. Naturally, many turned to Claude itself to learn more about her. However, when asked about Clark, Claude could provide only limited information, largely based on those recent reports. When pressed about whether it knew anything beyond them, the AI reportedly responded: “Honestly, the answer is: essentially nothing.”
So, who is Cami Clark?
According to reports, Cami Clark was born in Reno, Nevada, in 1979. She reportedly began dating Dario Amodei in 2014, following a three-year relationship with former Google CEO Eric Schmidt.
When Amodei joined OpenAI in 2016, Clark is said to have acted as a sounding board and strategic adviser. Reports also say she introduced Amodei to Schmidt, who visited the couple's San Francisco apartment in 2018 and was impressed by their ideas, particularly those relating to AI.
In December 2020, Amodei, his sister Daniela and several other OpenAI employees left the company and founded Anthropic. Schmidt subsequently participated in Anthropic's $124 million Series A funding round, announced in May 2021.
Clark reportedly proposed creating a venture fund called the Mother of AGI Fund in early 2021, which would have given her a formal role in Anthropic. However, the proposal did not proceed after other co-founders declined to support it.
Although she does not formally work for Anthropic, Clark is believed to have taken on a public-facing role around Amodei, interacting with investors and politicians at conferences and introducing them to the Anthropic CEO.
What did Cami Clark do before meeting Dario Amodei?
Before her relationship with Amodei, Clark was involved in entrepreneurship. Around 2010, she and Michelle Capocefalo reportedly founded Eddice, which described itself as a “revolutionary porn company.”
Reports say Clark was introduced to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein in 2011. Emails released by the US Justice Department reportedly show that the two remained in contact until 2013, while Clark was seeking investment from him for her business. The released documents do not indicate that Epstein ultimately invested in the company.
Clark later shifted towards women's health technology, with reports suggesting that Schmidt invested in one of her startups. She is also said to have worked with Mira Murati at Leap Motion and introduced Murati to OpenAI co-founder Greg Brockman.
More recently, as Anthropic faced pressure from the Trump administration over restrictions concerning the Pentagon's use of Claude, Clark reportedly told political figures that the company's mission included protecting America.
As Anthropic moves towards a possible IPO, Clark remains outside the company's formal organisational structure. Nevertheless, recent reports portray her as an influential adviser to Amodei, even as remarkably little public information exists about her.
