Mohammad Amir has ruled out a return to Pakistan cricket, saying his “Pakistan chapter” has come to an end after he acquired British citizenship. The former Pakistan fast bowler is now eligible to play as a local in English domestic competitions, changing his status within the sport.
Amir, who announced his international retirement in December 2024, explained that his British status comes with specific conditions. Speaking to cricket journalist and YouTuber Muhammad Furqan Bhatti, he said his new classification effectively prevents him from returning to Pakistan cricket under the current rules.
“I am a British local now. When you play in competitions such as the County Championship and The Hundred as a local player, you have to sign a document stating that you cannot play for another country as a local. So, the Pakistan chapter I had before is now closed,” Amir said.
The left-arm pacer obtained British citizenship through his marriage to Narjis Khan, who is a British citizen. Amir has been based in the UK for several years and has continued playing domestic and franchise cricket there since stepping away from international cricket.
AMIR CAN PLAY PSL AS AN OVERSEAS PLAYER
Before confirming that his Pakistan chapter had ended, Amir had said he was still willing to participate in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) as a foreign player.
This arrangement allows him to continue competing as a local in English domestic tournaments while potentially representing a PSL franchise under the overseas-player category. His eligibility became particularly relevant after he played for Rawalpindi in the 2026 PSL.
His British citizenship has also allowed Amir to take part in English domestic competitions without occupying an overseas slot. Nottinghamshire signed him for the 2026 T20 Blast, where he was registered as a local player.
He later played for Trent Rockets in The Hundred under the same local-player status.
Amir finished his international career with 259 wickets in 147 matches across Tests, ODIs and T20Is. He was also part of Pakistan’s title-winning campaign at the 2017 Champions Trophy.
