A woman was caught on camera allegedly assaulting her domestic help inside a luxury apartment in Gurugram, triggering widespread outrage on social media. The video, recorded by a neighbour through a kitchen window, went viral and prompted police to register an FIR against the woman.
The incident reportedly occurred on July 24 at DLF The Camellias on Golf Course Road in Sector 42. In the footage, the domestic worker is seen inside a kitchen when the woman, believed to be her employer and the owner of the apartment, approaches her. She allegedly slaps the woman repeatedly, pushes her, grabs her face and pulls her hair. She also appears to threaten the domestic worker.
Police identified the accused as the wife of a Gurugram-based liquor businessman who resides in the upscale complex. According to police sources, the domestic worker, who is from Nepal, had been employed at the woman's residence for around two years.
The video drew strong reactions online, with several users expressing shock and calling for action against the woman.
Gurugram Police took cognisance of the footage and registered an FIR against the accused on Sunday night under Section 115(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, relating to voluntarily causing hurt, and Section 127(2), concerning wrongful confinement.
DCP (East) Sandeep Kumar said the police were verifying the details and would proceed according to the law.
“After taking note of the viral video, an FIR was registered against the woman employer under Section 115 of the BNS at Sushant Lok police station on Sunday night. We are verifying the facts and action will be taken as per the law,” he said.
Police officials also visited the apartment and conducted an inquiry after the footage gained widespread attention. Sushant Lok SHO Aman Kumar said investigators were examining the incident from multiple angles.
“Based on the viral video, we are investigating from all angles,” he said.
According to police sources, the domestic worker has since returned to her hometown and submitted a written request asking that the video be taken down from social media platforms.
A relative of the woman also claimed that she had not filed a complaint with Gurugram Police and did not have any grievance against her employer.
The case has been forwarded to senior officials and the area magistrate, while the investigation continues.
