Paytm begins enabling consumers to handle payments with Claude with straightforward AI suggestions

Paytm has integrated its Payment Gateway with Anthropic’s Claude using the Model Context Protocol (MCP), allowing businesses to retrieve payment-related information through simple AI prompts. The integration enables merchants to check transactions, monitor refunds, access settlement information and reconcile payments without constantly switching between dashboards or working directly with APIs.

The integration was announced by Paytm Payments Services Limited (PPSL), a wholly owned subsidiary of One 97 Communications. Through its new MCP Connector, businesses can link their Paytm Payment Gateway accounts with Claude and access authorised payment information through a conversational interface.

WHAT CAN BUSINESSES DO WITH CLAUDE AND PAYTM?

The integration allows merchants to use Claude to retrieve various types of payment information, including transactions, payment links, refunds, settlements, subscriptions, order statuses and reconciliation details.

For instance, instead of manually navigating through a payment dashboard to determine whether a customer’s refund has been processed, a business could simply use an AI prompt to retrieve the relevant details. Finance teams could similarly use Claude to check settlement information and reconciliation records.

The goal is to reduce the need to switch between multiple dashboard sections, reports and API requests for routine payment-related tasks.

HOW DOES THE MCP INTEGRATION WORK?

The system is based on the Model Context Protocol, or MCP, a standard that enables AI applications such as Claude to securely connect with external services and access authorised information.

Under the new integration, businesses can securely authenticate and connect their Paytm Payment Gateway accounts with Claude. Once the connection is established, Claude can retrieve relevant payment information from Paytm based on the permissions granted by the merchant.

The setup could be particularly useful for developers and businesses creating AI-powered workflows involving payments, finance and commerce.

Paytm says merchants will retain control over what information Claude can access. Payment data will only be made available through authorised permissions, while actions such as processing payments, issuing refunds and handling settlements will continue to be managed through Paytm Payments Services’ existing infrastructure.

According to the company, the integration is designed to give entrepreneurs, developers and business teams faster access to payment information while maintaining merchant-controlled permissions and security.

As businesses increasingly adopt AI for financial operations, customer support and other routine activities, Paytm says the MCP integration forms part of its broader effort to develop AI-enabled payment infrastructure for MSMEs, enterprises, businesses and developers.
