Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday held a phone conversation with US Vice President JD Vance, during which the two leaders discussed measures to further strengthen the India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership across various sectors.
Modi also congratulated Vance and Second Lady Usha Vance on the arrival of their son and extended his best wishes to the family. No further details about the discussion were immediately disclosed.
Vance’s conversation with the Prime Minister comes at a time of several significant international and domestic developments that could influence India-US ties.
On the geopolitical front, the call took place shortly after Turkiye, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan entered into a mutual defence agreement, signalling a potential shift in regional alignments amid the ongoing West Asia conflict.
The pact, signed on Friday by Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Saudi Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman, and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, provides that an armed attack against any one of the three nations would be considered an attack on all three.
The conversation also came amid concerns expressed by US Congressman Riley Moore regarding proposed amendments to the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA). Moore had alleged that the changes could enable the Indian government to take control of churches and religious charitable organisations.
In response to Moore’s comments, the Ministry of External Affairs on Thursday maintained that legislative matters were India’s internal affairs. It also pointed out that several countries, including the US, have regulations governing foreign funding.
MODI-VANCE PREVIOUS CALL
Vance’s previous publicly known phone conversation with PM Modi took place in May 2025 during Operation Sindoor against Pakistan, a conversation that Modi later revealed in the Lok Sabha.
The Prime Minister told Parliament that he had seen around four missed calls from the US Vice President before returning the call. Modi said Vance had warned him that Pakistan was preparing to launch a major attack on India.
According to Modi, he responded by telling Vance, “Our response will be even stronger.”

Modi also congratulated Vance and his wife on the birth of their son.
The US Vice President and Usha Vance recently became parents to their fourth child, a baby boy named Alec Neel Vance. The child was born at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Maryland.
Vance announced the birth on X, saying that Usha and the newborn were “happy and healthy” and that their other children were delighted to welcome their younger brother.
The birth was also notable historically, as it marked the first occasion in more than 150 years that a serving US Vice President had welcomed a child.
INDIA-US COMPREHENSIVE GLOBAL STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIP
Although specific details of the latest conversation have not been made public, PM Modi said the two leaders discussed avenues to further broaden the India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership.
The bilateral relationship was formally upgraded to a Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership during then-US President Donald Trump’s visit to India in February 2020. The partnership encompasses defence and security, trade and investment, critical technologies, space, energy, healthcare, education and people-to-people relations, along with cooperation under the Quad framework.
In 2025, India and the US launched the COMPACT and TRUST initiatives aimed at expanding collaboration in defence, commerce, artificial intelligence, semiconductors, quantum technology and other emerging fields. The two countries also set a goal of achieving $500 billion in bilateral trade by 2030.
India and the US have additionally been engaged in negotiations for a broader trade agreement, further underscoring the importance of the relationship as one of India’s most extensive strategic partnerships.
