India regain control after Sri Lanka’s mid-innings resistance
India finished Day 4 of the second Test in Colombo firmly in control, despite a period in the middle of the day when Sri Lanka appeared capable of turning the follow-on into a genuine advantage.
India bowled Sri Lanka out for 290, giving themselves a 213-run first-innings lead, and Shubman Gill immediately enforced the follow-on. It was the third time Gill has enforced a follow-on since becoming India's Test captain.
The decision initially looked questionable. Sri Lanka recovered from 5/1 and went into tea at 199/3, with Pasindu Sooriyabandara and Kamindu Mendis putting India’s bowlers under pressure. Sooriyabandara was particularly aggressive against the spinners, using sweeps and reverse sweeps effectively.
Their third-wicket partnership produced 115 runs, with Mendis making 55 and Sooriyabandara falling just eight short of his century.
Suthar changes the game
The turning point came when Manav Suthar finally broke through.
After conceding heavily in his first spell, Suthar dismissed Sooriyabandara for 92, with Rishabh Pant completing a sharp stumping. He later removed Keshara Nuwantha, while Saransh Jain claimed two important wickets, including his maiden Test wicket.
Suthar's response was particularly impressive: after giving away 65 runs in his first 12 overs, he returned for a second spell and produced the breakthroughs India needed.
By the time rain ended play, Sri Lanka were 229/6, holding a lead of only 16 runs.

The major obstacle is now time rather than the target. With rain already costing India almost 15 overs on Day 4 and more rain forecast for Thursday, India need to finish the Sri Lankan innings quickly and then chase whatever target is set.
A 2-0 series sweep would be especially valuable for India’s World Test Championship campaign.
The most interesting subplot heading into Day 5 is whether Gill can keep his aggressive approach while managing an attack that has already bowled a huge number of overs.
