While most 18-year-olds are preparing for college or adjusting to campus life, Nathan Thomas was already standing in front of a classroom, teaching engineering students.
The Florida teenager has earned a place in the Guinness World Records as the world's youngest male professor at the age of 18 years and 346 days. He achieved the feat after joining Miami Dade College as an engineering instructor, teaching students who were, in many cases, nearly his own age.
In doing so, Nathan broke a 306-year-old record previously held by Scottish mathematician Colin Maclaurin, who became a professor at the age of 19 in 1717.
An academic journey that began at 10
Nathan's educational journey started much earlier than that of most students.
At just 10 years old, he enrolled at Miami Dade College through a dual-enrolment programme while continuing his school education.
By the age of 14, he had joined Florida International University, where he completed both his bachelor's and master's degrees in Electrical Engineering with honours.
Years later, Nathan returned to Miami Dade College—not as a student, but as a faculty member.
In August 2023, he began teaching COP 2270: C for Engineers, a course designed to introduce engineering students to C programming and computational problem-solving.
Age is no barrier
Teaching students close to his own age has never been an issue for Nathan.
He believes that learning depends on curiosity and dedication rather than age, saying everyone enters the classroom with the common goal of gaining knowledge and improving themselves.
For him, the most rewarding aspect of teaching is seeing students grasp concepts they initially found challenging.
Nathan has also credited his family, particularly his mother, for nurturing his interest in academics. Growing up in a family of engineers, he said his mother made mathematics enjoyable and helped build a strong foundation in science from an early age.
Engineering and law
Nathan's ambitions extend beyond engineering.
While teaching, he is also pursuing a Juris Doctor degree at the University of Miami School of Law and is expected to graduate in 2028.
He hopes to specialise in intellectual property law, combining his engineering expertise with legal knowledge to help safeguard scientific and technological innovations.
According to Nathan, the analytical thinking and problem-solving skills he developed through engineering have also proved valuable in his legal studies.
