The next UPI innovation will be safer payments rather than quicker ones

UPI has already transformed digital payments by making transactions fast and effortless. The next challenge, experts say, is making those payments safer without making them more complicated.

UPI’S NEXT FOCUS: TRUST

With fraudsters increasingly relying on social engineering to trick users into authorising transactions themselves, speed is no longer the biggest differentiator. Digio CEO Abhinav Parashar said trust will determine whether digital payments can continue expanding sustainably.

Rather than adding multiple authentication steps, the industry is looking towards technologies that can detect suspicious activity in the background.

SMARTER FRAUD DETECTION

Behavioural biometrics, device intelligence and AI-powered fraud analytics could identify unusual transaction patterns without creating additional hurdles for genuine users. Liveness detection could also help distinguish real users from images, videos or deepfakes.

As Parashar put it, the future of fraud prevention is likely to depend more on intelligence than additional friction.

BIOMETRICS COULD MAKE PAYMENTS SAFER

Pulse founder Chirag Shah highlighted on-device biometric authentication as another promising development. Fingerprint or facial recognition could allow users to authorise payments locally on their devices while keeping the experience almost as simple as it is today.

The idea is to strengthen security without forcing users to take extra steps every time they make a payment.

DETECTING FRAUD BEFORE TRANSACTIONS ARE COMPLETED

Zaggle founder Raj P Narayanam argued that AI combined with behavioural intelligence could help identify suspicious transactions before money actually moves.

Potential tools include real-time fraud detection, behavioural analysis, device binding, transaction-risk scoring, contextual authentication, proactive scam warnings and stronger identity verification.

This is particularly important because many UPI scams exploit users psychologically rather than attacking the underlying payment infrastructure.

SECURITY WITHOUT LOSING CONVENIENCE

The challenge is to improve protection without undermining the simplicity that made UPI so successful.

A risk-based system could help achieve this by applying additional security measures only when a transaction appears suspicious. Routine payments could remain frictionless, while unusual activity triggers stronger verification.

The next generation of UPI may therefore be defined by invisible security — systems that continuously assess devices, behaviour and transactions in the background and intervene only when something appears wrong.

The evolution is essentially from instant payments to trusted instant payments, with AI, biometrics, behavioural intelligence and continuous risk monitoring working behind the scenes.
