Bengaluru residents could soon face significantly higher parking costs, with the Karnataka government proposing annual residential parking permits of up to Rs 25,000 and on-street parking charges of as much as Rs 80 per hour for cars across the Greater Bengaluru Area.
The Urban Development Department has issued the draft Greater Bengaluru Area (Parking) Rules, 2026, and invited the public to submit objections and suggestions within 30 days of its publication in the official Gazette on August 11.
Under the proposed system, annual residential parking permits would vary based on vehicle type. Owners of small cars could be charged Rs 15,000 annually, while sedan owners would pay Rs 20,000 and SUV owners Rs 25,000.
DRAFT ALSO PROPOSES COMMERCIAL PARKING FEES
The draft rules also recommend revised on-street parking charges in commercial and other non-residential areas. Cars could be charged between Rs 40 and Rs 80 per hour depending on the road category, while two-wheelers could face fees ranging from Rs 20 to Rs 40 per hour.
Under the proposed classification, cars would cost Rs 40 per hour on Category C roads, Rs 60 on Category B roads and Rs 80 on Category A roads. For two-wheelers, the corresponding rates would be Rs 20, Rs 30 and Rs 40 per hour.
The proposed policy also aims to encourage motorists to use organised off-street parking by keeping those charges lower. Cars could be charged Rs 20 to Rs 40 per hour for off-street parking, while two-wheelers would pay between Rs 10 and Rs 20.
Monthly off-street parking charges are proposed at between Rs 1,000 and Rs 4,000. A 50% discount would also be available on monthly off-street parking fees for vehicles parked between 8 pm and 8 am.
WHY HAS THE GOVERNMENT PROPOSED THE POLICY?
The proposed rules aim to discourage motorists from occupying public parking spaces for extended periods by introducing progressively higher charges for vehicles parked on roads beyond two hours.
If implemented, the policy would significantly alter parking management in Bengaluru by introducing market-based pricing for public parking spaces and encouraging motorists to use designated off-street facilities.
The government has invited members of the public to submit their objections and suggestions before the proposed rules are finalised.
