Natural disasters often produce extraordinary stories of survival. Amid the devastation caused by the flash floods in Nepal, a remarkable escape involving a family has drawn widespread attention online.
A viral video showed at least three members of a family near their green-painted house as powerful floodwaters swept into the area. Within moments, the muddy torrent intensified, covering the surrounding land and carrying away structures in its path.
The family appeared to be dangerously close to the advancing floodwaters. Despite this, all three members survived, and their house also remained standing.
As the floodwaters ripped through the area, the building suffered relatively little visible damage even as nearby structures were washed away.
The footage quickly spread across social media, with users expressing concern over whether the family had survived. Those concerns were later eased after another user posted a follow-up video confirming that the family was safe.
The strength of the house also became a major topic of discussion online. Social media users pointed out that the structure managed to withstand the powerful torrent while surrounding buildings and debris were swept away.
One user was so impressed by the house’s resilience that he suggested the person who constructed it deserved the “Nepal Ratna Man Padavi” award, praising what he described as the remarkable architectural abilities of earlier generations.
The family’s survival came against the backdrop of extensive destruction across the region. At least 587 people have died and nearly 1,500 remain missing on the Nepal and Tibet sides of the border after flash floods struck central Nepal on Wednesday. The disaster was triggered by an ice-rock avalanche following a glacial collapse near the border.
India has offered to deploy National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) personnel to help with rescue operations in Nepal. The offer came as reports emerged that Kathmandu had rejected requests from several countries to send search and rescue teams following the disaster.
At a media briefing on Friday, the Ministry of External Affairs said India’s immediate focus was on locating its nationals who remained unreachable. According to the MEA, 320 Indian nationals and 100 people of Indian origin were still uncontactable.
