Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe, who is leading the state’s ongoing crackdown on restaurants and food establishments, received a standing ovation at a public event in Pune. The audience broke into applause as the IAS officer walked onto the stage.
The warm reception came after several weeks of high-profile inspections by the Maharashtra FDA. The department has suspended the licences of nearly 100 food establishments across Mumbai and other parts of the state over alleged hygiene and food safety violations.
Mundhe has become the public face of the enforcement campaign, earning appreciation from many consumers while also facing criticism from sections of the hospitality industry.
A video shared on Instagram by user Bhagyesh Dombe showed Mundhe being welcomed at an event titled Unstoppable Tukaram at Pune’s Bal Gandharva Ranga Mandir. As he walked towards the stage, members of the audience stood up and applauded, with several people taking out their phones to capture the moment.
Mundhe appeared visibly touched by the reception.
“For the first time, I witnessed such immense love, respect, and admiration for a government officer—not out of protocol, but truly from the heart,” the caption accompanying the video read.

The video has sparked mixed reactions online. While several users praised Mundhe for his efforts to crack down on food safety violations, others pointed out that enforcing regulations is part of a public servant’s responsibility.
Mundhe has defended the Maharashtra FDA’s enforcement campaign, saying the inspections are intended to protect food safety and uphold hygiene standards rather than target specific businesses.
The drive has involved inspections of restaurants, pubs, hotels and other food establishments across Maharashtra, with nearly 100 licences suspended so far over alleged violations. Recent raids have reportedly uncovered expired food products, fungus-infected meat, reused cooking oil and poor storage practices at several establishments, keeping the FDA’s campaign in the spotlight.
Known for his strict administrative approach, Mundhe has developed a reputation for taking firm action. His latest campaign has further increased his public profile, with many social media users describing him as a tough administrator and even comparing him with the fictional police character Singham.
The standing ovation in Pune is the latest indication of the strong public response to Maharashtra’s food safety crackdown, even as the enforcement drive continues to generate debate within the hospitality sector.
