A 26-year-old man in Uttar Pradesh's Kaushambi attempted suicide by jumping into the Ganga after going live on Facebook and displaying a two-page suicide note. Identified as Ankit Kumar, the man alleged during the livestream that he was being harassed by members of his wife's family.
Fishermen near the river rescued Ankit after he jumped into the Ganga and informed his family about the incident. He was subsequently taken to a health centre in Muratganj, where he is receiving treatment.
MAN DISPLAYS SUICIDE NOTE BEFORE JUMPING INTO GANGA
The incident occurred around 11 am on Wednesday near the Ganga overbridge along the Ram Van Gaman Path.
Before reaching the river, Ankit started a Facebook Live session. During the broadcast, he displayed a two-page suicide note and said alleged harassment by his in-laws had led him to take the step.
Ankit mentioned several individuals during the livestream, including Rajesh from Kasariya, Sonu from Barmatpur, Lavkush, Panna Lal, Shivdani, Piyush and Prateek. He alleged that they had harassed and threatened him.
He also claimed that he had approached Kaushambi police with a complaint about the issue approximately a year earlier.
After displaying the note and speaking about the alleged harassment, Ankit went to the Ganga near Basedi and jumped into the river.
Fishermen who witnessed him in the water rescued him and subsequently informed his family. Police and Ankit's relatives then arrived at the location.
DISPUTE OVER MOBILE PHONE, WIFE LEFT WITH CHILD
Ankit's family said he married Priya, a resident of Prayagraj, around one-and-a-half years ago, and the couple have a child.
According to the family, Ankit and Priya had an argument over a mobile phone on Tuesday. Following the dispute, Priya left for her parents' house with their child.
Ankit's family alleged that after Priya went to her parents' home, her father and brother assaulted Ankit.
The following morning, Ankit was reportedly upset and crying while missing his wife and child. He then started a Facebook Live session in which he discussed the dispute and his allegations of harassment.
Ankit's father, Ram Bahadur, also spoke about the incident.
ANKIT ALLEGES THREATS AND ASSAULT
During the Facebook Live broadcast, Ankit said he had been troubled by his wife's family and held them responsible for his decision to attempt to end his life.
He alleged that members of his wife's family had visited his house the previous day, misbehaved with him and assaulted him. During the livestream, he pointed towards an injury near his eye.
Ankit also alleged that he had received threats over the phone, including warnings that cases would be registered against him. He said he had made repeated complaints but the matter had remained unresolved.
He further claimed that members of his wife's family would visit his house in an attempt to resolve the dispute, but said the situation continued.
During the livestream, Ankit identified Prateek as his wife's brother and named several others whom he accused of harassing him.
Before ending the livestream, he also made an appeal to his younger and elder brothers.
The allegations made by Ankit during the Facebook Live have not been independently verified.
POLICE PROBE UNDERWAY
After being rescued from the river, Ankit was taken to a health centre for medical treatment. He is currently undergoing treatment and is said to be in serious condition.
Ankit reportedly works as a contractual employee with the Nagar Palika Parishad Bharwari.
Police were informed about the incident and said an investigation was in progress.
The police are examining the circumstances surrounding Ankit's suicide attempt as well as the allegations he made during the Facebook Live.
