An Assamese woman lawyer practising in Delhi was allegedly attacked by a group of people in the Prasad Nagar area of central Delhi amid an ongoing property dispute between two groups, police said on Saturday.
A purported video of the incident has emerged on social media, showing the woman visibly distressed and in tears. In the video, she alleged that her client’s rival group targeted her because she is an “outsider” in Delhi. She further claimed that the assault took place in the presence of police personnel, who allegedly failed to take action against those involved.
“My client had a programme scheduled for tomorrow. They (the rival group) wanted to spoil it, and that is why they created a major ruckus. They targeted me because I am an outsider in Delhi, while they are local goons,” the woman was heard saying to someone over the phone.
During the confrontation, the woman also alleged that members of the opposing group hurled racial slurs at her. According to a PTI report, the group members allegedly questioned why people from the Northeast should come to Delhi for employment.
The woman, who was seen crying, also appealed to Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta. “Our CM says Delhi is safe for everyone. Is this the safety of Delhi, where a group of men targets a woman lawyer?” she said.
She also said, “The Prime Minister says, ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao’ (Save daughters, educate daughters). How will daughters educate themselves if an incident like this happens?”
WHAT DO THE POLICE SAY?
Police said the woman lawyer was representing a person known as “Dollar Baba”, who is involved in the property dispute. The two groups are currently engaged in a dispute over a property in the Prasad Nagar area.
The woman has lodged a complaint alleging that she was molested during the incident. Police said an FIR is being registered based on her complaint under the relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
The other group involved in the property dispute has also filed a separate complaint. It alleges assault, following which police have registered a cross-FIR against the first group, officials said.
Further investigation into the incident is underway.
