The Election Commission on Friday assigned distinct interim names and election symbols to the two competing factions of the Trinamool Congress after putting the party’s existing name and symbol on hold. The faction headed by Mamata Banerjee has been given the name “Mamata All India Trinamool Congress” along with the “football player” symbol, while the breakaway group has been allotted the name “Democratic Trinamool Congress” and the “envelope” symbol.
The Election Commission clarified that these names and symbols are temporary and will be valid only for the upcoming by-election, as the ongoing battle over control of West Bengal’s Opposition party shows no signs of easing.
