You can now use your voice to interact with Gemini AI and get tasks done. Google has introduced new voice capabilities for Gmail, Docs and Keep, allowing users to search through emails, create documents and organise notes simply by speaking. The goal is to make Google Workspace more conversational, reducing the need to type commands manually.
Google announced the new features in a blog post, saying Gemini's voice capabilities are being rolled out across Workspace. The company said users can use their voice to draft documents, locate information in their inbox and capture ideas.
“New Gemini voice capabilities are rolling out so you can search your Gmail inbox, organise thoughts and tasks in Keep, and create new Docs, all conversationally. Rolling out now for Google AI subscribers!” Google CEO Sundar Pichai said in an X post announcing the update.
Here is a quick look at how Gemini's new voice features work.
The update introduces three voice-based tools to Google Workspace: Gmail Live, Docs Live and Keep Live. Each is aimed at a different use case, but they all follow the same basic approach — users speak, and Gemini handles the task.
Gmail Live
Gmail Live allows users to search their inbox using spoken questions.
Rather than opening individual messages or scrolling through lengthy email conversations, users can simply ask Gemini questions such as, “What’s my flight’s gate number?” or “What’s going on at my kid’s school this week?” Gemini searches the user's inbox and provides the relevant information.
Docs Live
Docs Live is designed by Google as a hands-free brainstorming partner.
Users who have an idea but are unsure how to begin can simply explain their thoughts aloud. Gemini can then transform that stream of ideas into a structured document while taking the surrounding context into account.
If given permission, Docs Live can also access relevant information from Gmail, Drive, Chat and the web. Google says the feature can assist with brainstorming, preparing an outline and adjusting the tone while developing an initial draft.
Keep Live
Keep Live brings the voice experience to Google Keep and focuses on quickly recording ideas and tasks.
Users can speak freely about whatever they are thinking, after which Gemini can turn the spoken input into organised notes, lists and actionable tasks.
Availability
Gemini's new voice capabilities are beginning to roll out this week. Gmail Live and Keep Live are available to Google AI Plus, Pro and Ultra subscribers, while Docs Live is currently limited to Pro and Ultra subscribers. Google said the features will also be introduced for Google Workspace business customers in the near future.
