Kuldeep Yadav has delivered a powerful reminder to India head coach Gautam Gambhir with a stunning 10-wicket performance for Yorkshire against Essex in the County Championship at Headingley. The left-arm wrist-spinner produced his best-ever first-class match figures as Yorkshire secured a commanding innings-and-106-run victory.
Kuldeep claimed 4/70 in Essex’s first innings before following it with an outstanding 6/50 in the second. His overall figures of 10/120 marked his first 10-wicket haul in first-class cricket. He also contributed 36 runs with the bat as Yorkshire scored 390 before dismissing Essex for 284.
The performance is especially noteworthy given Kuldeep’s uncertain place in India’s Test plans. Despite being one of the country’s leading white-ball spinners, he has struggled to establish a permanent position in the Test side. Since making his Test debut in 2017, he has played only 19 matches, highlighting the limited opportunities he has received in the longest format.
KULDEEP’S TEST CASE BECOMING HARD TO IGNORE
For several years, Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja were India’s preferred spin combination in Test cricket. Their contributions with both bat and ball made them central to the team’s balance, leaving Kuldeep competing for a place whenever conditions called for an additional spinner.
That situation has changed considerably. Ashwin has retired, while Jadeja, now 37, is moving towards the latter part of his career. Even so, Kuldeep’s route to a regular place in the Test XI remains complicated because India continue to prioritise batting depth and have other spin options available.
Washington Sundar has gradually become an important component of India’s Test plans. His off-spin gives the team another bowling option, while his ability with the bat adds significant value when India require additional balance in the playing XI.
Manav Suthar has also emerged as a serious contender following an impressive beginning to his Test career. The left-arm spinner claimed seven wickets on debut against Afghanistan and then followed it with a 10-wicket match haul against Sri Lanka in his second Test, strengthening his credentials as a potential long-term option.
While Suthar offers control and accuracy, Kuldeep provides the added dimension of wrist-spin and a different challenge for opposing batters. With Gambhir and the selectors having several combinations to consider, Kuldeep’s remarkable 10-wicket performance for Yorkshire could not have come at a more appropriate time.
The display serves as a timely reminder that, despite Suthar’s emergence and Sundar’s all-round abilities, Kuldeep still possesses the match-winning quality needed to make a strong case for a regular role in India’s Test team.
