The internet is going crazy over Dyson's AI toothbrush with camera


Dyson on Tuesday unveiled a new cleaning device, but this time it is not another vacuum cleaner. The company has entered the electric toothbrush market with a product that brings artificial intelligence and a camera to oral care.

The Dyson CameraJet electric toothbrush is priced at $499, or roughly Rs 42,000. It features a built-in camera, AI-powered gap detection and a precision liquid jet designed to identify and clean the spaces between teeth while users brush.

The toothbrush is currently available in select markets and comes in two colour options: Ceramic Ultra Blue and Ceramic Pink.

The unusual combination of a camera and AI in a toothbrush has also caught the internet’s attention. The ability to see what is happening between the teeth while brushing has left many people intrigued, amused and surprised.

The most distinctive feature of the CameraJet is its camera, which is built directly into the brush head. Dyson says the device uses a 100,000-pixel macro-lens camera along with its Gap Optical Targeting system to identify spaces between the teeth.

The system captures 28 images every second and continuously scans for gaps. When it identifies one, the toothbrush can direct a targeted burst of mouthrinse towards that specific area in as little as 100 milliseconds.

Instead of spraying mouthrinse broadly across the mouth, the idea is for the toothbrush to identify where cleaning is needed and automatically direct the liquid jet there while the user continues brushing.

The camera has another function beyond powering the AI system. Through the MyDyson app, users can get a live view of their mouth, effectively turning the toothbrush into a miniature dental camera.

Dyson says the camera activates only when the live-view feature is being used or when the automatic jet function is operating. The company also says images are neither stored on the toothbrush nor uploaded to the cloud.

The technology behind the device has reportedly taken six years to develop. Dyson says 661 engineers worked on the project, which involves 16 million lines of code. Its machine-learning system was trained using more than 470,000 dental images.

For cleaning, the CameraJet uses a conical jet rather than the narrower jet typically found in conventional water flossers. Dyson says the design covers a larger area while operating at lower pressure.

The toothbrush also features a 12.5ml mouthrinse reservoir, a dual-bristle brush head and variable sonic oscillation. The latter is designed to keep the bristles moving consistently instead of allowing them to stop when they press against the teeth.

In essence, Dyson’s new device combines the functions of an electric toothbrush, water flosser and miniature mouth camera into a single product.
