Three people were killed and another was critically injured after a BMW carrying four occupants plunged from the Coastal Road bridge in Mumbai and crashed at a construction site below.
The accident occurred around 5 am on Sunday. According to the Coastal Road Control Room, the black BMW was travelling from Marine Drive towards Haji Ali when the driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle, allegedly because of excessive speed, causing it to fall from the elevated bridge.
India Today exclusively accessed CCTV footage of the incident. The video captures the car flying off the elevated Coastal Road at 5:03 am before crashing heavily into the construction area on the ground below.
All four occupants were rushed to the nearby civic-run Nair Hospital immediately after the crash. Doctors declared three of them dead on arrival. Two of the victims were identified as 21-year-old Shanay Gajjal and a 17-year-old boy. The third deceased, a man believed to be around 25 years old, had not yet been identified, an official said.
The fourth passenger, an unidentified man estimated to be around 20 years old, suffered serious injuries and remains in critical condition in the trauma ward of the hospital, the official added.
Police have begun an investigation into the accident.
The Mumbai Coastal Road is a 10.58-km high-speed freeway that links Marine Drive in south Mumbai with the Worli end of the Bandra-Worli Sea Link.
