The wait is finally over, and the response has been overwhelming. Ticket sales for India’s much-anticipated football exhibition match against Brazil opened on the official ticketing platform at 4 pm IST on Wednesday, September 2. Within just 20 minutes, most seats, especially those in the non-premium categories priced between Rs 1,000 and Rs 5,000, had been sold. The rush was so intense that fans were placed in a virtual queue, reminiscent of the scramble for IPL tickets.
Five-time world champions Brazil, currently fifth in the FIFA rankings, will take on India at Kolkata’s Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan on October 3. It will be the first appearance of Brazil’s senior men’s national team in India, making the fixture one of the most significant matches in Indian football history. India, ranked 138th in the world, will face their highest-ranked opponent since the FIFA World Ranking system was introduced in 1992.
Premium tickets costing between Rs 10,000 and Rs 15,000 also attracted strong demand, while the cheapest tickets were priced at Rs 999, a relatively high figure for an Indian football match. With a capacity of 85,000, the Salt Lake Stadium is expected to be packed when Brazil arrive in Kolkata.
Fans hoping to see Brazil’s biggest stars also have reason to be optimistic. An AIFF official has indicated that Brazil are likely to travel with their strongest squad unless injuries prevent certain players from participating. That could mean Kolkata witnessing stars such as Vinicius Jr, Rodrygo and Endrick, with Carlo Ancelotti leading the team.
The match will also be Brazil’s first fixture during the FIFA international window following the 2026 World Cup. The Brazilian Football Confederation has said that the games against Australia and India will be used for preparation and player assessment ahead of the 2028 Copa America and 2030 World Cup.
Three big friendly fixtures
India, meanwhile, are treating the Brazil match as part of a much larger challenge rather than a standalone spectacle.
Head coach Khalid Jamil has announced a 26-member squad for a demanding series of three international friendlies against Panama, Brazil and Uruguay. India will open the run against Panama in Bengaluru on September 26 before heading to Kolkata for the Brazil clash on October 3. Just three days later, on October 6, the Blue Tigers will take on two-time world champions Uruguay at the same Salt Lake Stadium.
The squad features experienced players including Gurpreet Singh Sandhu, Anirudh Thapa, Sahal Abdul Samad and Manvir Singh, along with a number of younger players. Sandesh Jhingan and Lallianzuala Chhangte have notably been excluded, while four players have been included as reserves.
India’s preparatory camp will begin in Bengaluru on September 14. Following the Panama fixture, the team will travel to Kolkata on September 28, leaving the players with limited recovery time before two of the most high-profile matches of their careers.
The three-game schedule is particularly important because Panama, Brazil and Uruguay all participated in the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Facing these three teams will give Jamil’s squad three different but equally demanding challenges against opponents operating at a significantly higher level.
The Brazil encounter will understandably attract the most attention. Kolkata has a long-standing passion for Brazilian football, and the city’s strong support for the Selecao has added even more significance to the fixture.
For India, however, the importance of the tour extends well beyond the glamour of one match.
With Panama followed by Brazil and Uruguay within the same international window, the Blue Tigers will get a rare chance to play three high-quality opponents in quick succession. For a developing team, such matches can provide something that training and games against lower-ranked opposition cannot — a clear indication of where Indian football currently stands against some of the world’s strongest teams.
