A 46-year-old woman named Sujatha died after accidentally falling into a vessel filled with boiling sambar during a Vinayaka Chavithi annadanam (Ganesh Chaturthi food distribution) programme in Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh.
The incident took place on September 20 while Sujatha was helping with the cooking arrangements for the event. She reportedly lost her balance as a large vessel of sambar was being carried and fell into it.
CCTV footage showed Sujatha carrying the heavy vessel through a narrow passage with the help of another woman. Moments later, she appeared to lose her balance and fell face-first into the vessel.
Her feet could be seen moving in pain as a large amount of steam rose from the vessel. People nearby immediately rushed to help her. They helped her regain her balance before pulling her out of the boiling sambar and making her sit down as she visibly trembled.
Sujatha suffered serious burn injuries and was taken to a hospital in Vijayawada for treatment. She later died from her injuries.
The accident was recorded by CCTV cameras. Police have registered a case and launched an investigation into how the incident occurred, including whether negligence in the arrangements contributed to the accident.
