The government has cut the waiting period for booking a domestic LPG refill from 45 days to 25 days, offering relief to consumers, especially those living in rural areas.
Union Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas Suresh Gopi announced the change on Monday. With immediate effect, the revised 25-day booking interval will apply equally to domestic LPG consumers in both urban and rural areas.
WHY WAS THE LPG BOOKING GAP INTRODUCED?
Earlier this year, the government had introduced different booking intervals as a temporary step to manage LPG demand amid supply pressures following the conflict in the Middle East.
In March 2026, the Petroleum Ministry had fixed a 25-day booking gap for urban consumers and 45 days for those in rural areas.
The measure was introduced to control demand and maintain adequate LPG availability during a period of uncertainty over supplies.
The government has now revised the arrangement as the LPG supply situation has improved and refill backlogs have fallen significantly.
WHAT CHANGES FOR LPG CONSUMERS?
Under the new rule, all domestic LPG consumers can book their next refill 25 days after their previous booking, regardless of whether they reside in an urban or rural area.
The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has instructed state-owned oil marketing companies (OMCs) — Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL), Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) — to implement the revised rule with immediate effect.
For consumers in rural areas, the change effectively reduces the maximum booking interval by 20 days.
The ministry said the decision followed a review of the current LPG supply situation and the substantial decline in refill backlogs compared with the period when demand-management measures were first introduced.
The move is also intended to support domestic cooking-gas production and strengthen the country's preparedness to handle potential supply disruptions.
As LPG availability improves, the government has now placed domestic consumers in rural and urban areas under a common 25-day refill booking schedule.
