Flames burned on the street behind them, yet a couple sitting at a cafe in Paris continued drinking as if nothing unusual was happening. The scene, filmed near the Arc de Triomphe on October 17, unfolded amid violent protests spreading across France.
The video showed a man and a woman seated at an outdoor cafe table, calmly enjoying their drinks while objects on the road caught fire just a few metres away.
The pair appeared to continue their conversation without making any visible effort to leave, despite the unrest around them.
The stark contrast between their seemingly routine cafe visit and the raging fires in the background created a striking image of calm amid chaos. While the street behind them was ablaze, the couple remained in their seats, making for an unusual moment during the disorder.
According to Reuters, the footage was uploaded to the news agency’s servers after a delay. It later attracted attention online, with viewers offering different interpretations of the couple’s response.
One user on X viewed the scene as an example of resilience amid the unrest, writing, “Amid the chaos and protests, this serene scene in one of Paris's cafs stands out as a symbol of resistance and resilience.”
The video surfaced as demonstrations continued across France over the rising cost of living, increasing prices and concerns about the country’s social welfare system.
Saturday’s protests drew around half a million people across the country. However, the demonstrations escalated into some of France’s worst violence in years, with town halls and shops looted and set on fire. More than 2,500 people were arrested, while nearly 1,000 security personnel were injured.
