As son Anant remembers Dhirubhai's trip at the Jio IPO, Mukesh Ambani becomes emotional

Reliance Industries Chairman Mukesh Ambani appeared emotional at the Jio Platforms IPO listing ceremony in Mumbai as his son Anant Ambani spoke about the family’s journey and remembered the humble beginnings of his grandfather, Dhirubhai Ambani.

Mukesh was seen wiping tears from his eyes as his children, Anant and Isha Ambani, addressed the gathering, reflecting on the dreams, principles and hard work that helped shape the Reliance Group.

Jio Platforms made a strong stock market debut on Wednesday, October 28, with its shares listing at Rs 1,359 apiece on the BSE and NSE. This represented a premium of 21.36 per cent over the IPO price of Rs 1,119.

During his speech, Anant recalled a modest home in Chorwad, Gujarat, where his grandfather’s aspirations first took shape. He spoke about how Dhirubhai had worked at a petrol pump in Aden without money or influential connections before going on to establish a business empire. His journey, Anant said, demonstrated how an ordinary Indian could dream big and accomplish extraordinary things.

Anant also highlighted his father’s ambition to make India a global leader, pointing to the world’s largest refinery in Jamnagar as an example of what the country could accomplish through determination and hard work.

He then spoke about Jio, describing it as an initiative built on the vision of making internet access available to every Indian.

Describing the listing as an occasion for gratitude, Anant said it represented more than a corporate milestone, offering an opportunity to recognise everyone who had contributed to the company’s journey.

“Today, Jio is shared with India,” he said, likening the ringing of the stock exchange bell to a temple bell and comparing business with worship.

Anant added that Jio had received blessings from people across the country. He expressed this sentiment through the phrases “Jio mere laal” from mothers, “Jug jug Jio” from grandmothers and “Jio yaar” from friends.

He also highlighted how digital connectivity had enabled content creators to reach millions of people and made specialised services more accessible.

Anant thanked Jio’s employees, engineers, technicians, service personnel and retail partners, crediting their contributions for the company’s achievements. He also acknowledged Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of Digital India.

Isha Ambani, too, paid tribute to Dhirubhai, recalling his belief that ordinary Indians deserved an opportunity to participate in the country’s growth.
