Rohit Sharma could return as Mumbai Indians captain for IPL 2027, with the franchise's senior management reportedly favouring a move to reinstate its most successful skipper. India Today has learnt that Mumbai may hand the leadership role back to Rohit, raising questions about Hardik Pandya's future and the team's long-term captaincy plans.
Rohit guided Mumbai Indians to five IPL titles in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2020. However, he was replaced by Hardik Pandya before the 2024 season after the all-rounder returned to the franchise from Gujarat Titans.
The leadership change attracted considerable attention, but Mumbai finished at the bottom of the table in Hardik's first season as captain. The team reached the playoffs in 2025, yet the five-time champions have not lifted the trophy since 2020 and have failed to reach another final.
Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma had also been considered possible captaincy candidates. However, Mumbai may now be inclined to bring Rohit back, given his successful record at the helm.
WHAT HAPPENS TO HARDIK PANDYA?
The possibility of Rohit returning as captain has raised questions about Hardik's future with Mumbai Indians. Reports have linked the all-rounder with a potential move to another franchise, with Kolkata Knight Riders and Rajasthan Royals mentioned as possible destinations.
Mumbai and Rajasthan Royals were reportedly discussing a possible deal involving Hardik, although the negotiations appeared to stall at one point. Any transfer would require both teams to agree on suitable terms, including which player Mumbai might receive in exchange. No deal has been officially confirmed.
Yashasvi Jaiswal could be a potential option for Mumbai if negotiations with Rajasthan progress. The left-handed opener would strengthen the team's Indian batting contingent and provide a long-term choice at the top of the order.
With Rohit nearing 40, acquiring a younger Indian opener could also help Mumbai prepare for the years ahead. If Rohit eventually retires from the IPL, Jaiswal could remain a key part of the squad for the foreseeable future.
However, this remains a possibility rather than a confirmed plan. Mumbai's decision regarding Hardik will depend on its squad-building strategy and whether the franchises can agree on the terms of a potential trade.
WHY NOT SURYAKUMAR YADAV OR TILAK VARMA?
Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma had also been viewed as potential successors to Hardik as Mumbai Indians captain.
Suryakumar led the team when Hardik was unavailable last season. He captained Mumbai in Delhi and was also expected to lead the side in Raipur when Hardik could not feature. These developments had fuelled speculation that Suryakumar might take over permanently if Hardik departed.
However, the situation now appears to be shifting, with Rohit reportedly becoming the frontrunner for the role.
Suryakumar's record as India's T20 captain had also strengthened his credentials. He led the national side to the T20 World Cup title earlier this year, but his subsequent departure from the national team's leadership setup appeared sudden. No official explanation has been provided, and it is unclear whether the development has influenced Mumbai's decision-making.
Tilak, meanwhile, could have represented a longer-term captaincy option. His recent appointment as India's T20I vice-captain, with Shreyas Iyer leading the side, had prompted discussions about his leadership prospects.
The move appeared to signal a possible future leadership role for Tilak in Indian cricket. It also raised the possibility that Mumbai might consider developing him into their next captain.
Nevertheless, the latest reports indicate that Mumbai could favour Rohit's experience for IPL 2027 instead of giving the responsibility to Hardik, Suryakumar or Tilak.
WHY MUMBAI COULD TURN BACK TO ROHIT
Rohit's record as Mumbai Indians captain remains his biggest strength. The franchise won all five of its IPL championships under his leadership, and he played a central role in establishing the team's success during that period.
Mumbai have not won the tournament since 2020 and have struggled to make another appearance in the final. The leadership change before the 2024 season has not produced the results the franchise would have wanted, although the team returned to the playoffs in 2025.
Hardik's appointment also coincided with questions about the atmosphere within the dressing room. Concerns were raised over team unity, players' body language and the relationship between the captain and other members of the squad. Mumbai appeared to lack some of the competitive spirit that had helped them win titles under Rohit.
Although the team's difficulties cannot be attributed to a single factor, the franchise may now be considering a return to familiar leadership to restore stability. Rohit's understanding of Mumbai's culture and his record of delivering championships could work in his favour.
Bringing him back could therefore be an attempt to improve both leadership and on-field performances. However, a captaincy change alone would not necessarily resolve the team's problems. Mumbai would also need to assemble a well-balanced squad capable of competing for the title.
WILL IPL 2027 BE ROHIT'S LAST SEASON?
Rohit's age is another factor Mumbai Indians will have to consider. He will turn 40 during the 2027 IPL season, while the ODI World Cup is scheduled to take place later that year.
This has raised questions about how much longer he intends to continue playing in the IPL. It remains unclear whether the 2027 season could be his last or whether he plans to continue into 2028. No confirmed information about his future plans is available.
If Rohit returns as captain, Mumbai may need to use the upcoming season to prepare for a leadership transition. Tilak could be considered for the role in the future, while Suryakumar's captaincy experience could also make him a contender.
Another possibility is that Rohit could become more involved in the franchise's broader decision-making while continuing to play and lead the team. His experience could allow him to contribute more closely to Mumbai's planning and management, potentially making him an important part of its strategic think tank.
However, this remains speculative, and the franchise has not announced any such plans.
For now, reports indicate that Rohit is emerging as the leading contender to captain Mumbai Indians in IPL 2027. The franchise still has approximately six months to finalise its strategy, and the situation could change before the tournament begins.
If Mumbai decide to reinstate him, they would be returning to the captain who delivered all five of their IPL titles. The larger question is whether Rohit's experience can help the team regain its winning momentum while giving the franchise sufficient time to plan its future leadership.
