MS Dhoni gives a significant signal about the IPL's future; a decision is anticipated before December

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) star MS Dhoni has offered perhaps his clearest indication yet about his participation in the next season of the Indian Premier League (IPL). The former India captain said he would decide on his future before December this year.

Dhoni missed the entirety of IPL 2026 because of calf-related issues, as Chennai Super Kings failed to qualify for the playoffs. Since then, speculation has continued over whether the veteran wicketkeeper-batter will return for another season.

Speaking at a healthcare event in Bengaluru, Dhoni was asked about his future and responded with his characteristic humour. He said he would undergo medical tests before deciding whether he was fit enough to play another season for CSK.

“Doc, I will have to go through the test. You will have to give me the report, and then before December, I will have to see, you know, how strong I am to maybe play one more season,” Dhoni said, as quoted by ANI.

The former CSK captain jokingly placed the responsibility on the doctors, saying they would have to ensure he was physically prepared to handle the demands of another IPL campaign.

“And if I am not, then, you know, you will have to make sure that you do everything right with me and make sure that this old vintage vehicle is running well on the road. So all the pressure is on them,” he added.

CSK HOPING TO SEE DHONI IN IPL 2027

Chennai Super Kings remain hopeful that Dhoni will return to the field for IPL 2027. CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan has said that the final decision rests with the veteran player, although the franchise believes he could continue playing.

“It's a question you need to ask him. I also have to ask him. He informs us of his decision when he arrives in Chennai. I have a feeling that the chances of him continuing to play for CSK are there. He is still a player, you know,” Viswanathan said.

Following their failure to reach the playoffs in IPL 2026, CSK have also begun restructuring their coaching setup. Stephen Fleming has stepped down as head coach, with Zaheer Khan taking over the role.

Dhoni’s decision is expected to be an important factor in the franchise’s plans for the 2027 season, with the veteran yet to confirm whether he will extend his IPL career for another year.
