Paris Saint-Germain defeated Barcelona 4-2 in an action-packed UEFA Champions League encounter at the Parc des Princes on Wednesday, October 21. The thrilling contest featured attacking football from both sides, with the teams registering a combined 40 shots in a fiercely contested match.
Desire Doue delivered an outstanding performance as PSG scored more goals than Hansi Flick's Barcelona in a game that saw momentum repeatedly shift between the teams. Barcelona produced some impressive attacking spells but struggled to maintain their control against a flexible PSG side that capitalised on their errors.
The intense encounter also resulted in injuries to four players. PSG's Ousmane Dembele and Marquinhos suffered hamstring problems in the first and second halves, respectively. Barcelona's Dani Olmo was forced off in the opening half after landing awkwardly following a strong shoulder challenge in midfield. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia also left the field after sustaining an ankle injury during a challenge involving Barcelona right-back Xavi Espart.
Both teams created opportunities in an entertaining first half, although Barcelona's inaccurate final passes repeatedly disrupted their attacks. PSG managed more attempts on goal, including several from close range, but goalkeeper Joan Garcia produced a series of impressive saves to keep Barcelona in the match.
Barcelona frequently breached PSG's defensive lines through their quick passing, with Pedri orchestrating play in midfield. However, the attacking combination of Anthony Gordon, Raphinha and Lamine Yamal lacked the finishing required in the final third. Gordon endured a difficult evening, struggling to beat defenders, convert opportunities and deliver the decisive passes Barcelona needed.
PSG eventually broke the deadlock late in the first half when Doue cut inside onto his right foot and sent a low shot between two Barcelona defenders. Garcia, who had been excellent until that point, was caught off balance and could not stop PSG from taking the lead.
Barcelona responded after the interval and equalised in the 55th minute following a sequence of passes that opened up PSG's defence. Teenager Xavi Espart drove into the penalty area before unleashing a powerful close-range effort beyond PSG goalkeeper Matvei Safonov, who had made several important interventions earlier in the match.
The game continued at an intense pace. Lucas Hernandez headed home from a corner to put PSG back in front, but Barcelona quickly responded through Lamine Yamal. The young forward dribbled into the penalty area, got past his marker and scored from close range to bring the score to 2-2.
Just when Barcelona appeared to be gaining momentum, PSG scored twice to take control. Vitinha found the net with a long-range strike before Fabian Ruiz arrived at the far post to convert another opportunity, extending the hosts' advantage to 4-2 and leaving Barcelona with a difficult task.
FLICK ADMITS MISTAKES
Barcelona manager Hansi Flick acknowledged that his team had committed too many errors against a PSG side that effectively exploited their mistakes.
Flick pointed to poor ball possession and unnecessary turnovers, describing the match as a valuable test that had exposed areas where Barcelona needed to improve.
He also confirmed that Rodri, who started the match on the bench, would feature on Sunday against Madrid in the season's first El Clasico.
CHAMPIONS LEAGUE: OTHER RESULTS
Eighteen-year-old Rio Ngumoha played a key role in Liverpool's comeback, setting up goals for Ronald Araujo, Mac Allister and Florian Wirtz.
Liverpool had fallen 2-0 behind after an inconsistent start. Captain Virgil van Dijk even raised his hands in apology after an inaccurate header allowed Georges Mikautadze to score Villarreal's opening goal.
Manchester City responded to their defeat against PSG with a commanding 5-1 victory over AEK Athens, despite leading scorer Erling Haaland starting on the bench. Phil Foden scored a hat-trick, with his second goal standing out after a sweeping team move.
Atletico Madrid held on with 10 players to secure a 1-1 draw against Stuttgart, preventing the German underdogs from joining PSG and Liverpool on nine points.
Julian Alvarez had scored for Atletico to cancel out Jamie Leweling's opener. However, midfielder Morten Hjulman was sent off after a reckless sliding challenge from behind on Angelo Stiller, leaving Atletico to defend their position with a numerical disadvantage.
MCTOMINAY SCORES IN NAPOLI'S WIN
Scott McTominay scored his first two goals of the season as Napoli defeated Bodo/Glimt 4-3, easing the pressure on coach Massimiliano Allegri.
McTominay also struck the post and had missed a month of action after undergoing a surgical procedure in early September to treat an irregular heartbeat.
Serhou Guirassy scored twice as Borussia Dortmund secured a 2-1 victory over Azerbaijan's Sabah, although the German side wasted several other opportunities.
The result was not as convincing as Dortmund would have wanted following their defeat to Bodo/Glimt the previous week and a draw against Union Berlin, which allowed Bayern Munich to move above them at the top of the Bundesliga standings.
Pavel Kacor scored with a leaping volley in the 90th minute to earn Slavia Prague a 2-2 draw against Fenerbahce. The Turkish side had taken a 2-0 lead early in the match, but a defensive mistake by Matto Guendouzi gave the Czech team an opportunity to recover.
PSV secured a narrow 1-0 win over Porto, handing the Portuguese side their third defeat. Meanwhile, Roma recorded a comfortable 4-0 victory against Slovan Bratislava.
