Ayushmann Khurrana and Sara Ali Khan’s upcoming film Udta Teer has been denied permission for public screening in Nepal ahead of its scheduled theatrical release. Nepal’s Central Film Censor Board took the decision after determining that the film’s content fell under restrictions outlined in the country’s cinema legislation.
An official letter from Nepal’s Ministry of Communications and Information Technology to distributor National Cine Group Nepal stated that the film could not be publicly screened under Section 8(3) of the National Cinema (Production, Exhibition and Distribution) Act, 2026.
According to the letter, the Central Film Censor Board reviewed the material submitted for examination and found that the film’s content fell within a category restricted by law. Consequently, the board decided against granting permission for its public exhibition.
Udta Teer, directed by Aakash Kaushik, was scheduled to release in theatres on Friday.
Why has Udta Teer been denied permission in Nepal?
According to reports, Udta Teer explores tensions between India and Pakistan. The subject matter is believed to have influenced the censor board’s decision, although the ministry’s letter does not identify the specific scenes or content that prompted the restriction.
Nepal’s cinema laws contain provisions allowing restrictions on films whose content is considered to affect a country’s national interests or its communities. As a result, Udta Teer has not received approval for public screening in Nepal.
The decision was announced ahead of the film’s planned theatrical release, leaving its release in Nepal uncertain.
The film stars Ayushmann Khurrana and Sara Ali Khan in the lead roles. Directed by Aakash Kaushik, Udta Teer is scheduled to release in Indian theatres on October 23.
