2026 has undoubtedly been a remarkable year for Suriya. After struggling at the box office for nearly a decade, the actor has finally regained his momentum with two back-to-back hits, Karuppu and Vishwanath and Sons. Now, as he prepares for his third release of the year, Scene, the question is whether Suriya can repeat his success and finish 2026 with a hat-trick.
With only a few days remaining before Scene arrives in theatres on November 6, attention is on whether the actor can maintain his winning run, particularly after seemingly changing his approach to selecting scripts and finding a way to reconnect with audiences.
2026 is Suriya's year
Suriya is among the few actors in Tamil cinema who can convincingly handle larger-than-life commercial entertainers, socially conscious films carrying strong messages and content-driven narratives. However, the past decade has been difficult for him at the box office. Movies such as NGK and Kanguva failed to live up to expectations, while his choice of projects increasingly became a subject of discussion.
It now seems that Suriya has discovered a way to win audiences back, and his recent success could be linked to the stories he has chosen.
The turnaround began with RJ Balaji's Karuppu, a fantasy entertainer that combined commercial appeal with a social message. The film provided Suriya with a much-needed theatrical breakthrough after several years without a major box-office success. It went on to earn approximately Rs 300 crore worldwide, becoming the biggest hit of his career and one of the year's highest-grossing Tamil films.
One of Karuppu's biggest strengths was its combination of devotion, fantasy, social commentary and mainstream entertainment. The film highlighted loopholes in the legal system while allowing Suriya to return to the larger-than-life hero image audiences associate with him. His transformation into a deity-like character, in particular, became a major talking point. It reinforced the idea that viewers still enjoy seeing him in larger-than-life roles when the story gives them a compelling reason to connect with the character.
Then came Vishwanath and Sons in August. For his second major success of 2026, Suriya collaborated with Telugu filmmaker Venky Atluri. In contrast to Karuppu, the film was a family entertainer centred on an unconventional romance involving an age gap. It marked a shift away from the action-oriented roles that audiences frequently associate with the actor.
The film's biggest achievement was its portrayal of modern relationship dynamics while retaining its emotional depth and humour. Suriya's charming yet understated performance, his fresh pairing with Mamitha and Radikaa Sarathkumar's memorable turn as his mother helped the film appeal to a wider family audience.
Suriya's popularity in Telugu-speaking regions and Venky Atluri's understanding of that market also worked in the film's favour. Despite being a Tamil production, the Telugu version played a significant role in its theatrical performance. The film eventually earned close to Rs 209 crore.
Its success was important because it showed that Suriya did not always need an extravagant screen presence or a high-concept action storyline to attract audiences to theatres. A more intimate narrative, supported by an emotional conflict and an unconventional character, could prove equally successful.
Together, Karuppu and Vishwanath and Sons have added more than Rs 500 crore to Tamil cinema's box-office collections in 2026. More significantly, the films have restored something Suriya had struggled to achieve for years: consistent box-office success.
Can Scene make it three in a row?
The next challenge is Scene. Directed by Jithu Madhavan, the film represents another intriguing project choice for Suriya. Jithu has established a distinctive presence in Malayalam cinema through films such as Romancham and Aavesham, both of which connected with audiences through unconventional storytelling, humour and memorable characters. While Romancham brought together horror and comedy, Aavesham, featuring Fahadh Faasil, became a hugely popular action comedy thanks to its quirky characters and engaging narrative.
With Scene, Jithu Madhavan makes his Tamil cinema debut alongside Suriya, Nazriya Nazim and Naslen. The combination of a filmmaker recognised for his unconventional approach and a star enjoying a career revival makes the project particularly interesting.
The film also presents Suriya with an important opportunity. Having scored two successes in very different genres, he can now demonstrate that his comeback is not restricted to a particular type of story. Another consecutive hit would further establish that he has found the right combination of commercial entertainment and content-driven storytelling.
However, completing a hat-trick will not be easy. Expectations for Scene are significantly higher following the momentum created by Suriya's previous two films. The movie will need to establish its own appeal and deliver on its promise instead of depending solely on the actor's recent box-office success.
