ADSI report: 147 bridges are under danger and need to repaired immediately

The tragedy of the collapse of the Morbi bridge has once more made people consider how well bridges are maintained and what safety precautions are taken at susceptible locations.

According to the ADSI (Accidental Deaths and Suicides in India) study, 20,313 persons have perished in the last 10 years as a result of various types of structures collapsing. In India, there were more than 1,630 fatal structural collapses in 2021. Based on the previous ten years, 2,682 persons died in 2012 alone as a result of accidents and building collapses.

In order to assess the status of bridges throughout India, the Ministry of Highways and Transport introduced the Indian Bridge Management System (IBMS) in 2016. According to the report, 147 bridges in India require immediate repair.

According to a media report, the Ministry of Transport and Highways later notified the Lok Sabha in 2018 that a survey had discovered that 147 of the nation's 1,66,236 bridges had been identified and categorized as "hazardous" and required immediate repair.

According to an ADSI report, around 36,362 persons died in 2021 as a result of drowning. Combined data indicates that over 3 lakh people have died from drowning in the past ten years. Over the years, the number of drowning-related fatalities has risen steadily.
