As the first Indian movie to receive an Oscar for Best Original Song, RRR has written history. When Naatu Naatu was named the Best Original Song at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, it wasn't just SS Rajamouli who leaped for pleasure; the entire country cheered as MM Keeravaani and Chandrabose entered the stage to accept their trophy.
Saying that RRR is Everything Everywhere All at Once won't be an overstatement. Even though the Michelle Yeoh-starring film won seven Oscars, RRR has remained the topic of conversation.
SS Rajamouli crammed the Ramayan, Mahabharata, anti-colonialism, magic realism, and India's freedom movement into RRR in just over three hours. Given the fan bases of these two Telugu actors and the nationalistic tone of the movie, the independent filmmaker was already in a win-win position when Ram Charan and Jr. NTR were cast as the lead characters.
It's debatable whether or not RRR is a decent movie. What it is not, though, is a clever movie that checks all the appropriate boxes and even creates some of its own. It is a show that encompasses everything at once and then some, making any criticism inconsequential.
When asked about nationalism in RRR during a press conference with Western media, Ram Charan responded that the film has multiple levels and is about two friends as well as nationalism and colonial history. "Simply put, the movie's setting in a certain age is its concept. The filmmaker did not intend for such to happen "Added he.
Everything about RRR was excellent, including the actors (which includes Ram Charan, Jr. NTR, Ajay Devgn, and Alia Bhatt), the music (by MM Keeravani), the visual effects, and the script (by V Vijayendra Prasad). After the success of Baahubali 1 and 2, and now with RRR, SS Rajamouli has once again shown that his movies aren't just about elaborate special effects and massive settings, but also about compelling narratives that keep viewers watching.
RRR captivated viewers not merely in India but even elsewhere. Following a successful run at the Indian box office, RRR won over viewers in the West before being released in China and Japan. It broke box office records and received a warm welcome elsewhere as well. Despite being three hours long, the movie was a hit with Western audiences. The friendship and sense of patriotism displayed by Alluri Sitarama Raju (Ram Charan) and Komaram Bheem (Jr NTR) resonated with Western audiences.
And all of a sudden, RRR is back in the news because Naatu Naatu won the Oscar for Best Original Song.
