The mafia has taken center stage ever since the Uttar Pradesh Police visited the Sabarmati central jail in Ahmedabad on Sunday to return gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmed to Prayagraj. Former Samajwadi Party MP Atiq Ahmed has been imprisoned since 2019 and is the subject of more than 100 criminal proceedings.
Raju Pal, a BSP lawmaker, was murdered in 2005, and Atiq Ahmed is the primary suspect. He is also charged with murdering Umesh Pal, the key witness in the slaying.
After a Supreme Court ruling, Atiq Ahmed was transferred to Sabarmati jail in 2019 after being charged with planning the kidnapping and assault of real estate investor Mohit Jaiswal while incarcerated in Uttar Pradesh.
In preparation for his appearance before the Prayagraj court on Wednesday in connection with an abduction case in which he is an accused party, the Uttar Pradesh Police started action to bring gangster Atiq Ahmed back.
He will appear before a special court to hear the decision in the 2007 kidnapping and criminal conspiracy case involving Umesh Pal. Atiq Ahmed will appear in court together with the other defendants in the case.
On Sunday morning, the police squad arrived at Sabarmati jail in Ahmedabad, and at about 6 o'clock, they left the facility with Ahmed under heavy protection.
On Monday morning, after traveling through several states, Ahmed's cavalcade entered Uttar Pradesh and halted at the Jhansi police lines. Lawyers, media teams, and Ahmed's sister are all observing the procession.
"It's a good program, by the way. Hatya karna chahte hain (I am aware of their plan; they intend to kill me), "He informed reporters in front of the prison.
Atiq Ahmed requested protection from the Supreme Court earlier this month, claiming that he and his family had been wrongfully accused of being involved in the Prayagraj murder of Umesh Pal and that the UP Police might kill him in a staged encounter.
To bring the gangster back, the Uttar Pradesh police chose a road route that goes through Jhansi and Shivpuri in Madhya Pradesh.
