Foreign nationals, including Indians, will be safely evacuated from the violently unstable Sudan, according to Saudi Arabia. In a statement released on Saturday, the Saudi foreign ministry claimed that 91 foreigners who were stuck had already been evacuated.
The Arab country reported that 66 of the 91 expatriates it evacuated were from friendly nations, including India. Additionally, it has evacuated citizens of Bangladesh from war-torn Sudan.
This comes following Saudi Arabian and UAE counterpart meetings with the minister of external affairs, S. Jaishankar. "Practical support on the ground" had been pledged by both nations.
According to a statement from the Saudi foreign ministry, "the number of citizens who were evacuated from friendly countries reached 66, representing the following nationalities: Kuwait, Qatar, UAE, Egypt, Tunisia, Pakistan, India, Bulgaria, Bangladesh, the Philippines, Canada, and Burkina Faso."
In Sudan, a violent power struggle between the army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) is taking place all throughout the nation. The evacuation takes place after both sides issued statements pledging to observe a three-day ceasefire beginning on Friday in observance of Eid al-Fitr.
Conflict over a globally supported proposal to establish a new civilian government two years after the military coup and four years after the overthrow of tyrant Omar al-Bashir set off the violence. Both sides charge the other with obstructing the change.
