After 9 years, an Odisha thief returns Lord Krishna's jewels with a note of apology

A burglar who had taken Lord Krishna's gems from the Gopinath Temple in Gopinathpur, Odisha, returned them after 9 years with a note explaining that ever since he had taken them, he had been plagued by nightmares.

It seems that the man had recently read the Bhagavad Gita and had come to his senses. The presiding deities Krishna and Radha owned the priceless jewels, which were theirs to keep.

The burglar, who sought to remain nameless, stated in a note, "During 2014, (from) a Yagna at Yagna Shala (where the rite of Yagna takes place), I had taken the ornaments for which I faced a lot of troubles during these 9 years and I relinquish these.

He mentioned the priest Sri Debesh Chandra Mohanty as he placed the bag of jewels, which contained the stolen headgear, earrings, bracelets, and a flute, at the temple's entrance. The unknown thief added in his apologetic message that he also left an additional Rs 300 as penance in addition to the jewelry.

The robber admitted in his note that he intended to return the stolen diamonds to the temple after being inspired by Lord Krishna's teachings.

Both temple officials and followers rejoiced at the stolen treasures' recovery. The thief's deed of repentance and understanding of the significance of Lord Krishna's teachings is evidence of the Bhagavad Gita's influence.
