55 people were killed on the Bengaluru-Mysuru highway over a five-month period

An accident hotspot has emerged on the Bengaluru-Mysuru Motorway, which was constructed to increase communication between two Karnataka tech hubs. According to an article in Star of Mysore, the motorway experienced 570 accidents over the course of five months, resulting in the deaths of 55 individuals.

The research states that out of 570 accidents, 52 people had severe injuries, and another 279 people only suffered mild ones. Another 184 people suffered minor wounds. The safety of travelers has come under scrutiny due to the high number of incidents on this first motorway in south India.

The government has already implemented a number of steps, such as limiting the use of two and three-wheel vehicles on this motorway with complete access control. The locals cut the fencing in a few spots along the motorway, which led to the animal presence on the road as well. On the congested motorway, a few large vehicles were also seen entering the wrong direction.

Recently, Mysuru-Kodagu MP Pratap Simha even pleaded with the locals to refrain from destroying the expressway's fencing. He had previously stated that the Bengaluru-Mysuru Motorway was the first fully access-controlled roadway in south India, which is why there were fences on either side of the route.

I request for your comfort that the residents of Bengaluru, Mandya, Ramanagara, and Mysuru refrain from disturbing the fence. A serious accident could occur if an animal breaches the damaged portion of the fence and enters the motorway.

Costing Rs. 8,408 crores, the 119-km motorway was constructed. 52 kilometers of the overall length are greenfield, with five bypasses to ease traffic congestion. There are 11 overpasses, 64 underpasses, 5 bypasses, and 42 tiny bridges as part of this project. Additionally, the motorway features six lanes and two-lane service roads on either side.
