Zomato gets criticism for its casteist World Environment Day marketing with a "kachra"

The National Commission for Scheduled Castes served Zomato with a notice regarding an advertisement on June 5th, World Environment Day, on Tuesday. Aditya Lakhia, who played the Dalit character 'Kachra' in the film Lagaan, appeared in the promo to emphasize the point that Zomato recycles trash.

The commercial, however, did not sit well with internet users, and the business was viciously ridiculed on social media. People found it incomprehensible that the business was portraying waste using an actor who played a "Dalit."

Zomato removed the advertising and issued a clarification following the online outrage. Unintentionally, we may have offended the feelings of some cultures and people, the tweet said. The video has been deleted by us.

But it appears that Zomato's problems are far from ending. The National Commission for Scheduled Castes has now sent a notice to the creator, Deepinder Goyal, according to NDTV. The commission will also look into the matter in great detail.

"In case the commission does not receive a reply from you within the stipulated time, the commission may issue summons for your personal appearance," states the notification that was sent to Goyal.

Actor Aditya Lakhia was portrayed as a lamp, paper, paperweight, watering can, and other types of coats in the advertisement, which has since been taken down. Each of these products, according to the business, was created utilizing recycled "kachra" garbage.

Lakhia portrayed a crippled Dalit man in the film Lagaan, and his bowling contributed to the team's victory. Due to his caste, the villagers had initially ostracised him; nevertheless, the movie's star, Amir Khan, is seen standing up for him and including him in the cricket team.
