Suggestions from stakeholders: Minister of Justice on 3 new criminal law projects 


Justice Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal said on Tuesday that the government considered proposals from various stakeholders before introducing the bills. Additionally, speaking about the Independence Day event at the Supreme Court, the Attorney General called the three bills a "major improvement".

“Bohot bada sudhaar hai…” Meghwal said.

Later, while addressing the media, the Justice Minister said that Union Home Minister Amit Shah had introduced three bills to amend the Indian Penal Code (IPC), the Criminal Procedure Code, and the Criminal Procedure Code. (CrPC) and the Evidence Act.

According to the Minister of Justice, the consultation process is carried out during the drafting of bills, and comments are collected from various stakeholders, prominent lawyers, law doctors, etc. Meghwal also said that Amit Shah was most involved in the consultation process. The respective committee will now conduct further consultations and do whatever is in the national interest, he added.

On August 11, Union Home Affairs Minister Amit Shah introduced the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) Bill, 2023; The Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) Bill of 2023 and the Bharatiya Sakshya (BS) Bill of 2023 will replace the Indian Penal Code of 1860, the Criminal Procedure Act of 1898 and the Indian Evidence Act, respectively. in 1872.

The minister also called on Lok Sabha Chairman Om Birla to return the three bills to the parliament's standing committee on internal affairs for consideration.

Among other things, three bills propose to repeal the Sedition Act and introduce a new provision with a broader definition of an offense.
