A case was opened when Gandhi's statue at a park in Kerala was 'disrespected'

A case has been officially registered in the state of Kerala, where an unidentified individual stands accused of showing disrespect to a statue of Mahatma Gandhi located within the premises of Payyannur Municipal Gandhi Park, situated in the Kannur district.

The legal action has been initiated under Section 153 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) following a formal complaint lodged by a member of the Congress party.

This incident unfolded approximately two days ago when an unidentified person inserted a stick into the hand of the life-sized statue of Mahatma Gandhi situated in the park.

Initially, the action went unnoticed, possibly due to some visitors mistaking it for an artistic representation of the historic Dandi March. However, upon closer examination, the act was brought to the attention of K Jayaraj, an individual affiliated with the Congress party, who subsequently reported the matter to the authorities.

In response to the complaint, the local Payyanur police department has promptly launched an inquiry into the incident. Nevertheless, it has been noted that there are no specific surveillance cameras aimed at monitoring the statue, which has posed challenges in the effort to identify the individuals responsible for this act of disrespect.
