A man hailing from Florida has been arrested on charges of attempting an audacious feat: crossing the Atlantic Ocean in a self-constructed vessel that remarkably resembles a hamster wheel, according to reports by the BBC.
The incident unfolded on August 26 when Reza Baluchi, a 44-year-old marathon runner, was intercepted by the US Coast Guard approximately 70 miles (approximately 110 kilometers) off the coast of Tybee Island, Georgia. In a bold and protracted standoff, Baluchi, displaying unwavering determination, refused to disembark from his makeshift hamster wheel vessel, leading to a three-day confrontation with the authorities. This marked the fourth time he had embarked on such a journey, with previous attempts consistently necessitating Coast Guard intervention.
Baluchi's inventive vessel, configured in the shape of a wheel and equipped with propelling paddles, was assessed by Coast Guard officers and found to be perilously unsafe due to its precarious condition. It was being kept afloat through a combination of wiring and buoys, as documented in the criminal complaint.
It is noteworthy that Baluchi's voyage coincided with preparations for the imminent arrival of a major hurricane, adding an extra layer of concern to the already perilous situation.
During the course of the prolonged standoff, Baluchi resorted to self-harm threats and falsely claimed the presence of a bomb on board, allegations that were recorded in court documents.
On September 1, after the passage of several days, Baluchi eventually chose to surrender and abandoned his improvised vessel. He was subsequently transported to a Coast Guard facility located in Miami. A subsequent examination revealed that the purported "bomb" was, in fact, a fabricated device.
In the aftermath of this incident, Baluchi now faces federal charges related to obstructing a boarding operation and violating a Captain of the Port order. It remains unclear whether he has secured legal representation for his criminal case.
This episode represents the latest in a series of arrests linked to Baluchi's unconventional oceanic voyages, all undertaken aboard what he refers to as a "bubble."
In 2021, he had to be rescued while attempting a journey from Florida to New York, ultimately drifting 30 miles south of his initial starting point. Prior to that, in 2014, he was rescued from a similar contraption near St. Augustine, followed by another rescue operation off the coast of Jupiter, situated near Palm Beach, in 2016.
Baluchi had previously asserted that his daring voyages were aimed at raising funds for a variety of charitable causes, including providing support to the homeless population, aiding the Coast Guard, and assisting first responders. In a 2021 interview, he expressed his ambition to offer assistance to public service personnel who are dedicated to ensuring safety and aiding those in need.
