A tragic incident occurred during an attempt to hike the Grand Canyon rim-to-rim in a single day, resulting in the unfortunate demise of a 55-year-old man of Indian origin. Ranjith Varma, hailing from Virginia, lost consciousness while participating in the challenging hike along the Grand Canyon's North Kaibab Trail. This endeavor took place in the renowned national park, and it unfolded with Varma as part of a group comprising approximately six other hikers.
The trek's objective was to traverse from the South Rim to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon by navigating the demanding terrain of the North Kaibab Trail all within a single day. Grand Canyon National Park spokesperson Joelle Baird conveyed these details, emphasizing the rigorous nature of the North Kaibab Trail, which is considered the most arduous among the major inner trails within the Grand Canyon.
The distressing situation escalated when an emergency call reporting a hiker in distress on the North Kaibab Trail was received by the Regional Communications Centre around 1:55 p.m. Regrettably, shortly after the call, Ranjith Varma's condition deteriorated, rendering him unresponsive. Despite the response of search and rescue personnel via helicopter, the challenging topography, characterized by steep and rocky terrain, complicated their landing efforts.
Tragically, all attempts to resuscitate Varma proved unsuccessful, leading to his unfortunate passing, as reported by the KSL-TV station. Following this tragic incident, Varma's body was transported to the Coconino County Medical Examiner's Office in Flagstaff. Both the Medical Examiner's Office and the National Park Service are conducting investigations into the circumstances surrounding this incident, which occurred within the majestic Grand Canyon.
While the exact cause of Ranjith Varma's demise remains undetermined at this juncture, spokesperson Joelle Baird postulated that the scorching heat likely played a role. The temperatures on the day in question were notably high, with readings within the inner canyon soaring above 100°F (37.7°C), according to the report. During the summer season, the exposed segments of the trail can experience temperatures exceeding 120°F (49 °C) even in shaded areas.
The North Kaibab Trail, renowned for its level of difficulty, is considered the most challenging among the Grand Canyon's principal inner trails.
