The former Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh and the leader of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP), N Chandrababu Naidu, found himself in legal trouble on a Saturday when he was apprehended by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in connection with a corruption case. This development comes after a First Information Report (FIR) related to the case had been officially filed in the year 2021.
The specific sequence of events unfolded as follows: Mr. Chandrababu Naidu was transferred to Nandyal Hospital for a thorough medical examination, after which he was slated to be presented before the court to address the charges against him. His arrest was carried out under the provisions of Section 50 (1) (2) of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) during the early hours of that Saturday morning. It's worth noting that he was taken into custody while taking a break in his vanity van, just after delivering a public speech in Nandyala city, Andhra Pradesh.
Regarding the case, the police authorities affirmed that they had submitted all relevant information and evidence to the court for further proceedings. Mr. Naidu had expressed his willingness to cooperate with the police, and arrangements were made for him to be escorted by his security personnel while being transported.
Notably, Mr. Chandrababu Naidu had made a prediction of his impending arrest in the recent past. This foresight appeared to come true as the events unfolded.
In a related development, the Minister for Social Welfare in Andhra Pradesh, Meruga Nagarjuna, had, just the day before, urged for the arrest of Chandrababu Naidu, accusing him of embezzling public funds. Addressing the media in Tadepalli, Nagarjuna pointed out specific instances, including Chandrababu Naidu's alleged expenditure of Rs 10 crore on renovations for the Lake View Guest House in Hyderabad before his departure amidst the cash-for-vote controversy. Additionally, he claimed that Mr. Naidu had utilized Rs 10 crore for the Chief Minister’s office, a whopping Rs 100 crore on chartered flights, and a substantial Rs 80 crore on Dharma Porata Deekshas. Nagarjuna, in defense of the current Chief Minister, highlighted the responsible distribution of Rs 2.31 lakh crore through Direct Benefit Transfer into the accounts of the general populace, contrasting it with Mr. Naidu's alleged financial practices.
