India and the United States will begin a war game in Alaska to increase military cooperation

Commencing on Monday, the Indian and US armies are poised to initiate a comprehensive two-week-long joint military exercise in the rugged terrain of Alaska, signifying their shared commitment to bolstering military collaboration and strengthening their strategic partnership.

This extensive exercise will encompass a diverse array of intricate drills, marking a significant milestone in the broader context of the India-US global strategic partnership. In preparation for this mega event, the Indian Army contingent, consisting of 350 personnel, has already arrived at Fort Wainwright in Alaska. This endeavor, designated as the 19th edition of exercise Yudh Abhyas, represents an annual cooperative venture conducted jointly by the Indian Army and the US Army.

It is worth noting that the preceding iteration of this exercise took place in Auli, Uttarakhand, in November of the previous year.

The exercise's multifaceted agenda includes not only the execution of various military drills but also the exchange of perspectives and the sharing of best practices across a wide spectrum of military skills. This encompasses areas such as combat engineering, obstruction clearance, and the tactics related to improvised explosive device warfare.

In a statement, the Indian Army emphasized that exercise Yudh Abhyas-23 will serve as a platform for both armies to engage in mutual learning and further solidify the bonds of camaraderie between them.

Notably, the lead battalion from the Indian contingent participating in the exercise is affiliated with the Maratha Light Infantry regiment, while the 1-24 infantry battalion of the first brigade combat team will represent the US side.

The exercise will feature the practice of a series of tactical maneuvers, ultimately enhancing interoperability, particularly in the context of United Nations peacekeeping operations. Both sides will also engage in comprehensive discussions to exchange their experiences and disseminate best practices.

The overarching theme of this exercise centers on the "Employment of an Integrated Battle Group in Mountain/Extreme Climatic Conditions" under Chapter VII of the United Nations mandate. In addition to field training exercises, there will be a command post-exercise and expert academic discussions on selected topics.

The scope of the field training exercise extends to the validation of integrated battle groups operating against hostile forces at the brigade level, the establishment of an integrated surveillance grid at the brigade/battalion level, and the deployment of heliborne/airborne elements and force multipliers.

Furthermore, the exercise will validate logistical and casualty management procedures during operations, encompassing evacuation and combat medical aid. These aspects are especially pertinent in high-altitude areas and extreme climatic conditions.

In summary, the exercise will foster an exchange of perspectives and the sharing of best practices across a wide spectrum of combat skills, including combat engineering, obstruction clearance, mine warfare, and improvised explosive device warfare. It represents a significant step forward in strengthening the military cooperation and strategic partnership between India and the United States.
