The National Investigation Agency (NIA) arrested a suspected terrorist in Imphal, Manipur, on Friday, alleging his connections with terror groups based in Myanmar. The authorities have accused him of conspiring to wage war against India by taking advantage of the ongoing ethnic unrest in the state. The arrest of Moirangthem Anand Singh was made by the NIA on July 19.
According to the NIA's investigation, the leadership of these Myanmar-based terror organizations has been actively recruiting individuals known as Over Ground Workers (OGWs), as well as militants and sympathizers. Their goal is to bolster their ranks and carry out attacks against security forces and opposing ethnic groups during the current turmoil in Manipur.
To achieve this objective, the aforementioned leaders have been acquiring arms, ammunition, and explosives through illegal means, which includes looting and seizing government facilities and resources, as noted by the NIA.
Following Singh's apprehension in Imphal, he was transported to New Delhi and brought before the court on Saturday. The court has granted the NIA custody of Singh for five days, extending until September 27. Further investigations into the matter are ongoing.
