Individuals who frequently engage in air travel are typically familiar with the initial procedures required before a flight takes off, which involve either powering down their electronic devices or activating "Airplane mode." Nevertheless, on occasion, passengers may choose not to comply with these directives and continue conversing on their mobile phones mere moments before the aircraft commences its departure. In such instances, the airline's cabin crew usually intervenes by requesting that these passengers either switch off their devices or activate airplane mode. However, a recent incident unfolded where a passenger adamantly refused to heed the cabin crew's instructions and persisted in his phone conversation as the plane readied itself for takeoff, ultimately resulting in his removal from the flight.
The individual in question, identified as 45-year-old Suranjit Das Choudhury, was embarking on a journey to Kolkata via Alliance Air. Despite the plane's preparations for departure, he continued to engage in a phone conversation. His persistent refusal to comply with the cabin crew's instructions escalated the situation to a violation of safety protocols. Consequently, Choudhury was instructed to disembark from the aircraft, along with 10 other passengers who declared their unwillingness to proceed with the flight in his absence.
According to sources, the aircraft was already in motion when this incident unfolded. However, the pilot opted to return the plane to its original position to facilitate the passengers' disembarkation. Subsequently, the group of passengers was handed over to local law enforcement authorities. It is noteworthy that no formal complaints were filed against the group, and all 11 passengers were permitted to return to their respective homes.
The rationale behind the requirement to activate airplane mode or power down electronic devices during flights is firmly rooted in the potential interference these devices can cause to an aircraft's communication systems. Electronic devices equipped with cellular capabilities emit potent radio waves and electromagnetic interference that can disrupt the aircraft's communication signals, impeding the pilot's ability to establish connections with ground support personnel and air traffic control.
Given the vast number of individuals who travel by air on a daily basis, the cumulative impact of these mobile phone signals can be overwhelmingly disruptive. Consequently, flight attendants consistently instruct passengers to activate airplane mode or completely power down their electronic devices.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has also highlighted the potential for mobile phone signals to overpower ground-based cell towers, leading to service disruptions. For this reason, the FAA has imposed several restrictions on the use of electronic devices during flights. However, passengers can still access Wi-Fi (if available on the flight) or utilize Bluetooth functionality while keeping their phones in airplane mode throughout their journey.
